Shadowy Narcissus: dreaming of you, Liverpool

I miss Liverpool so much. Travelling from Boiro, in Galiza, NW Spain, I got on a plane - after 22 years, since I came back from the USA - and got to the John Lennon Airport from Santiago. I was in the city by the Mersey for two days in the summer of 2007, and there were many magical moments that I treasure. I already spoke in another video about the young Oriental girl whose glorious smile made me feel like Lennon for a few seconds at the Beatles exhibit. I was impressed also by the fantastic Peter Blake paintings - so very cool! There was an interesting video of him, with artist friends, discussing the Preraphaelites, particularly Ophelia by Millais, in a cottage. Too much emotion for me. When I walked into The Cavern Club, I found out that it isn't the exact Cavern that the four lads played in, but the ambiance of nostalgia and regret was powerful enough. A local very young band was playing in the inner stage. They were good, but they didn't seem to take themselves seriously. I saw that Andy Summers once played there. Outside, in the hot night, I got my first taste of the UK club scene. Many girls looked like gorgeous Joss Stone and wore fancy dresses. I tried to search for the type of faces seen in Beatles videos. At a fast food stand, I asked for chicken, because I missed it from when I used to live in the States. To my surprise, a nice black young man asked if I wanted vinegar (!) with my fries. I sat on a doorstep opposite Revolution club and humbly enjoyed the meal while noticing how many fine-looking young people stepped out from amazing, horse-carriage-like taxis as if out of a dream. I never eat in restaurants, so, for once, I allowed myself a treat and went to a rather posh place which is very elegant and looks like a movie set, with fancy columns. I tried moussaka for the first time, but what I liked most was the fig roll: a fine cocktail which I wrote down on a postcard. When I returned to Matthew Street, I was astounded to find another Police connection. Just around the corner of the Cavern site, there is a round plaque with Carl Jung's face! He said that Liverpool is the pool of life. Inside the cool Revolution bar - be careful because with sneakers many places don't allow you to get in - I tasted an iced assortment of little tasty drinks. A cute Liverpool girl danced teasingly smiling at me and I at once felt less lonely. When the morning of departure arrived, feeling down on the last day of my trip to Ireland and Liverpool, I went to the real Cavern site, which is now a round department store and, at the cafeteria, I tremendously enjoyed an apple pie with ice-cream while looking at a magnificent book of rare Beatles photos they had there. George, Ringo, John and Paul always looked great, however strange the shot was. Curiously, what most crucially brought me back to the Beatles 60's was a building, a stately big brown building around the corner of Matthew Street. It has that special brown tone that appears on the cover of the Beatles at the BBC album. I then walked to where Brian Epstein's record shop used to be. Now there is an Ann Summers lingerie store in its place, and a Beatles memorabilia stand nearby. Opposite, a very modern shopping centre had a memorial monument for the men who died at war and also, if you don't mind me telling this, the most beautiful, best public bathroom I have ever seen, in any country. * On the April 2008 issue of Uncut magazine, I found these never-seen-before 1963 pictures, taken by photographer Michael Ward and left undeveloped for 45 years in a drawer until now. The whole book costs 450 pounds. * I found a beautiful stationery and books shop in Church street. I was astonished to see my favorite band The Police on the cover of Mojo magazine, which came in a bag and included nice pins and a book about Eighties music. Too much! Then, at Poundland, I found Coetzee's brilliant novel Elizabeth Costello for just one pound. * I love Liverpool band The Coral. On this fab song, I really dig the guitar hook that puntuates the verses. So classy and addictive. Plus, James Skelly's voice is very sympathetic and pleasant, and the whole band plays with spirit. * While riding trains and buses through the UK and Ireland, I was really moved by Cynthia's book about John. Many people seem to say that he was an angel and a devil, like all of us, but in a more pronounced way. Music: Go Home Productions - "Safesurfing For No One" + The Coral - "Who's Gonna Find Me" (hey, Julian Cope! I guess that my Welsh cromlech-loving idol is a Liverpudlian now.)
