Declaration of Independence, Museum of Natural Science
Totally not suspecting the museum to be full this afternoon. But the main reason seems to be this exhibit centered on a copy of the United States Declaration of Independence. This is a printed copy (by John Dunlap) of the Declaration, without any signatures. It is older than the (handwritten) document bearing the signatures of the Founders. An interesting thing about the text on the document is that the letter 's' often appears like the letter 'f', which I heard was intentionally done for reasons of style. As part of the exhibit, some people were dressed like eighteenth century Americans (one was Ben Franklin, another one was a lady (pretending to) suing a flag). There were also other people getting folks to register to vote. It was a nice day to watch people. (I also got to touch a horse shoe crab!)

This just in: The government has censored the declaration of independence! The hypocrisy of July 4th is astounding. The Text: Censoring the Declaration of Independence Every July 4th Americans celebrate a revolutionary document - The Declaration of Independence signed July 4th, 1776. The Declaration talks about the necessity "to dissolve the political bonds." About "unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Most radically of all it says "That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, IT IS THE RIGHT OF THE PEOPLE TO ALTER OR ABOLISH IT, and to institute new government..." But some people don't want us to get that message... If you go to the Jefferson Memorial you will see that the engraving of the first lines of the Deceleration of Independence leaves out "the consent of the governed." and our "right to alter or abolish" government... Then there is this movie reading of the Declaration which closes the door to Independence hall just as we get to that important phrase... Don't let the government and the media censor the Declaration of Independence It's time to celebrate the Fourth of July for what it really is... "Right to Alter or Abolish the Government DAY!" A true people's holiday! To clarify: This video is pointing out that the government has forgotten the true values that our country was built on I cite specific examples where the government has gone AGAINST the people (such as the draft, or iraq war). If we vote for them and they go against the people then how is this a democracy? I am not saying that I am in support for a direct democracy or that I am a libertarian, I am simply saying that the government should remember that the government is "for the people by the people"

We call for Independence...Again
When in the course of human events, unattended grievances make it obviously necessary for citizens to reexamine the structure of their government and bring about change. We were once a great nation, created by immigrants from foreign lands who populated a bountiful American continent. We now witness our nation's prestige and our domestic liberties considerably diminished. We, who suffer the consequences of a dysfunctional system of government, seek to reaffirm our founding principles and to improve upon the structure of representative government. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all human beings are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. However, if a Government controlled by special interests becomes unconcerned with the public's wellbeing and destructive of the people's rights, it is the duty, not just the right of the people to change the government to provide new safeguards for the citizens' security and happiness. The malevolent corrupting power of money on the body politic has caused repeated injuries to the public interest.
