MIAMI - O furacão Paloma, que atravessa Cuba neste domingo, continua perdendo força na parte central e leste da ilha, e já passou a ser um fenômeno de categoria um na escala Saffir-Simpson, que vai até cinco. Segundo o boletim das 7h (horário de Brasília) do Centro Nacional de Furacões (NHC, em inglês) de Miami, o centro do furacão está cerca de 45 quilômetros ao lés-sueste de Camagüey e continuará enfraquecendo ao longo do dia. O olho do furacão Paloma tocou a terra no litoral sul de Cuba, perto de Santa Cruz do Sul, na noite deste sábado, como um ciclone de categoria três e com ventos de 195 km/h. Antes da chegada do furacão, o governo de Cuba retirou dezenas de milhares de pessoas das áreas costeiras mais baixas no leste do país. Todas as províncias centrais e do leste de Cuba foram colocadas sob alerta de furacões.O Paloma já causou chuvas torrenciais e aumento das ondas nas ilhas Cayman, onde escolas, escritórios e empresas foram fechados e algumas pessoas foram levadas para abrigos. Ocorreram danos a propriedades, mas não há informações de feridos. Paloma é a 16ª tempestade a atingir o Atlântico nesta temporada do fenômeno e a 8ª a se converter em um furacão, tendo trazido fortes chuvas a partes de Honduras e Nicarágua, na América Central. Em Cuba, o furacão foi o quinto desta temporada. Gustav e Ike, que atingiram o país em 30 de agosto e 9 de setembro, respectivamente, causaram danos da ordem de bilhões de dólares e destruíram milhares de casas. The only unfavorable item I see in the short term is the development of a low off the south atlantic coast, as that low moves out the low level flow will be more conducive for the Caribbean system, This situation looks similar to when hurricane Michelle developed in this area in almost the same time of year in 2001.On the tropical front Paloma is gaining strength and continuing its track towards Cuba, surely to obtain the fine cigars that we in the states are not allowed to buy!
