History
The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi
The financial group dates back to 1880 as the Yokohama Specie Bank later renamed to The Bank Of Tokyo, Ltd. The Bank of Tokyo, Ltd.(株式会社東京銀行; Kabushiki Gaisha Tōkyō Ginkō). Also in 1880, The Mitsubishi Bank, Ltd. (株式会社三菱銀行; Kabushiki-gaisha Mitsubishi Ginkō) was founded by former samurai Yataro Iwasaki and was a core member of Mitsubishi Group companies. In April 1996, The Mitsubishi Bank, Ltd. and The Bank of Tokyo, Ltd. merged.
In July 2004, Japan's fourth-largest financial group UFJ Holdings offered to merge with MTFG. The merger of the two bank holding companies was completed on October 1, 2005. The core banking units of MTFG and UFJ, The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Ltd. and UFJ Bank, respectively, continued to operate separately until January 1, 2006, when they were merged to form The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd..
UFJ Bank
UFJ Bank Limited (株式会社UFJ銀行 Kabushiki-gaisha UFJ Ginkō) was a Japanese bank originally established by the merger in 2002 of Sanwa Bank(株式会社三和銀行; Kabushiki-gaisha Sanwa Ginkō) (based in Osaka) and Tokai Bank(株式会社東海銀行; Kabushiki-gaisha Tōkai Ginkō) (based in Nagoya). The UFJ was formed from a merger with Toyo Trust and Banking.
Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ
On January 1, 2006, Mitsubishi Tokyo Financial Group and UFJ Holdings, Inc. merged, creating the Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group. On January 1, 2008, UFJ Bank combined with The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi, Ltd., another unit of MUFG, to form The Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ, Ltd.

- UnionBanCal Corporation (approx 63% in Feb 2005; 68% in 2004; 100% in 2008)
