TED (Technology Entertainment Design) is an annual conference previously held in Monterey, California, USA but as of 2009 will be held in Long Beach, California, USA. It defines its mission as "ideas worth spreading", and selected talks given at TED are available free on its website. Its lectures cover a broad set of topics: science, arts, design, politics, culture, business, global issues, technology, and entertainment. The speakers are from a wide variety of communities and disciplines[1][2] and have included such people as former US president Bill Clinton,[3] Nobel laureates James D. Watson [4], Murray Gell-Mann,[5], Al Gore, internet entrepreneur Jimmy Wales,[6], notable architect and urbanism critic James Howard Kunstler [7] and Google co-founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page.[8] The TED Conference also has a companion conference, TED Global, held in varying locations.

The TED staff is headquartered in New York City and Vancouver, Canada.

250 TED talks are provided for viewing online and over 50 million viewings by over 15 million people had occurred as of June 2008.[9][10]

History

TED was founded by Richard Saul Wurman and Harry Marks in 1984 and was held annually from 1990. Wurman left after the 2002 conference; the event is now hosted by Chris Anderson and owned by his non-profit The Sapling Foundation,[11] devoted to "leveraging the power of ideas to change the world". In 2006, attendance cost $4,400 and was by invitation only.[12] The membership model was shifted in January of 2007 to an annual membership fee of $6,000, which includes attendance of the conference, club mailings, networking tools and conference DVDs.

Since 2007 TED talks have been made available in an increasing number of locations including;

TED Prize

TED Prize was introduced in 2005. Each year, three individuals are each given $100,000 and granted a "wish to change the world", which they unveil at TED.

In 2005, the inaugural winners were Bono,[13] Edward Burtynsky[14] on behalf of Worldchanging, and Robert Fischell.[15] Bono's wish resulted in more than one million people signing up to join the ONE Campaign to eradicate poverty.

2006 winners included Larry Brilliant,[16] Jehane Noujaim, and Cameron Sinclair.

In March 2007, the prize was awarded to Bill Clinton,[17] Edward O. Wilson,[18] and James Nachtwey.[19]

The winners for 2008 are Neil Turok, Dave Eggers, and Karen Armstrong.[20]

Geek Brief TV #411

GBTV Innovation Week continues and Brief 411 is all about HID. Human Interface Design is all about improving how people interact with machines. Mice and keyboards have been useful Human Interface Devices, but there seems to be a common longing for something more natural. When we saw Tom Cruise moving images around with gestures in the movie Minority Report [1], lots of us wanted to be able to do the same thing. At the TED conference in 2006, Jeff Han showed us we could [2]. Multi-touch is now accessible in iPhones and kind of accessible, depending on where you live, in the Microsoft Surface. We want electronic devices to understand speech. It's a massive challenge and researchers have moved us a long way, but not nearly close enough. Dealing with speech recognition engines via customer service 800 numbers works a lot of the time, but it's the frustrating times that stand out in my memory. Air touch is my term for multi-touch-like navigation that uses cameras or sensors to monitor gestures rather than contact with a screen. HRP.com [3] wowed us a while back with a Web site that uses a visitor's Web cam for navigation. It isn't perfect, but it's a start. Cam Trax Technologies [4] is writing software to take advantage of Web cams for navigation in games and other applications. The ultimate goal in Human Interface Design has to be brain control. We want to be able to think something and watch it happen on the screen. The first company that will bring a mass-market way to do it is Emotiv. Their Emotiv EPOC headset [5] reads brain waves and translates them into action on a computer. The headset will sell for under $300. John Walker: Re-creating great performances

http://www.ted.com Imagine hearing great, departed pianists play again today, just as they would in person. John Q. Walker demonstrates how antique recordings can be analyzed for precise keystrokes and pedal motions, then played back on computer-controlled grand pianos.
