Trail mix (also gorp) is a combination of dried fruit, grains, nuts and sometimes chocolate, developed as a snack food to be taken along on outdoor hikes. In New Zealand and Australia, it is known as scroggin.
Trail mix is considered an ideal snack food for hikes, because it is lightweight, easy to store, and nutritious, providing a quick boost from the carbohydrates in the dried fruit and/or granola, and sustained energy from the mono- and polyunsaturated fats in nuts.
Ingredients
Common ingredients may include:[1]
- Nuts, such as peanuts, cashews or almonds
- Dried fruits such as cranberries, raisins, apricots, apples or (candied) orange peel
- Chocolate: chips, chunks or M&M's
- Breakfast cereals
- Seeds, such as pumpkin or sunflower seeds
- Granola
- Carob chips or banana chips
- Shredded coconut
- Pretzels
- Ginger (crystallised)
A mix of only nuts (especially those rich in omega-3 fatty acids) and raisins is known as "student food" (or Studentenfutter in German-speaking countries).
Gorp and scroggin
The name scroggin (as trail mix is called in Australia and New Zealand) may be an acronym, taken from the first letter of eight ingredients: Sultanas, Chocolate, Raisins, Orange peel, Ginger, Glucose (sugar), Improvisation or imagination (i.e. the chef is supposed to add a favorite ingredient) and Nuts.
Acronyms for the word gorp, an alternate name for trail mix, are "Good Old Raisins and Peanuts",[2] "Granola Oats Raisins and Peanuts", or "Gobs Of Raw Protein".
These probably are backronyms and/or folk etymology. The Oxford English Dictionary cites a 1913 reference to the verb gorp, meaning "to eat greedily".

Scenes from the Grand Canyon during Winter
This is a mix of some of the videos I took at the grand Canyon during the best time to go- WINTER! It's less full, the rim is gorgeous with the snow cover, it's really not that cold even on the rim (more mild than a typical north east or north central city and in the canyon it's in the 60s or 70s on a typical winter day. Just watch the weather reports make sure you don't get caught in a snowstorm. As for my choice of music... well, I wanted to pay John Denver a tribute, but Country Roads and Rocky Mountain High just didn't seem appropriate for the Grand Canyon (I'll use those songs in other videos, hopefully), so this is what I came up with. Enjoy.

Birds eat from my hand
So I'm sitting up on Mount Bandera, talking to a couple young ladies that were at the top as well, and a bird swoops down and steals some of my delicious Trader Joe's Nuts About Raspberries Trail Mix. I held out another handful and sure enough, they came back for more. Bastards!
