Activate is a student newspaper at Rhodes University. It was established in 1947 as Rhodeo, and during apartheid became an active part of the struggle for freedom of expression as part of the now defunct South African Student Press Union [1]. These days, Activate is committed to informing students about issues relevant to their lives, mainly on campus. The newspaper is run entirely by the students and is published every second week during term time. The newspaper receives a sizeable grant for the Student Representative Council but most of its revenue is generated through advertising.
Activate's direct competitor is The Oppidan Press.
Since 2005 the staff who serve on the newspaper's two controlling committees (the executive and production committees) are selected and appointed by an editorial board made up of the outgoing editor and deputy editor including one other outgoing senior staff member (usually the editorial consultant), the station manager of Rhodes Music Radio and various staff members from the Rhodes School of Journalism. Traditionally the senior staff serve for a one year term. The current editor is Kate Douglas with Sean Messham as deputy editor.

Israel initiated its operation against the Hamas terrorist organization with the aim of protecting the residents of southern Israel and to make a fundamental change to the situation on our southern border. The rules have indeed changed, as is now apparent to all Hamas aggression against Israel since the withdrawal, and especially since its violent seizure of power in the Gaza Strip and the institution of its reign of terror, has led to the deterioration of living conditions in Gaza. Hamas has complicated the life of civilians on both sides of the border, and destroys and fatally harms any aspiration to a normal life. Hamas, motivated by its extreme Iranian-bred ideology, has rejected the stipulations of the international community, and has once again been exposed to all as the barrier to peace. The Hamas leadership is in hiding, the strength of its army has been reduced, and its command is weakened. It is clear that choosing Hamas was a mistake. We are witnessing the activation of the international community with the aim of curbing this terror organization and restoring hope to the residents of the region.
