The historic courthouse has anchored Plymouth's downtown for more than 100 years. But the tradition ends in August when the new courthouse opens on Obery Street. Court clerks are already scheduling September civil and criminal trials in the new building. The Registry of Deeds has already left its historic building downtown for a new one on Obery Street in front of the courthouse. Merchants worry it will be years before the courthouse and registry buildings generate the kind of pedestrian traffic the downtown has relied on for so many years. County commissioners have agreed in writing to cooperate with the town on common concerns such as the courthouse and wind power, but so far nothing concrete has come of the agreement.
